Description
The construction of real socialism and early totalitarian absurdistan in the Czech Republic is vividly depicted in a partially autobiographical novel. Lawyer Josef Martínek, in the position of an insignificant accountant at a laundry manufacturing company, is not a particularly oppressed person. He fights his everyday small battles for the survival of himself and his family. Basic foodstuffs and hygiene necessities, a more promising position in the queue for an apartment allocation, and an exit visa for traveling abroad are more important than 'noble' ideals, personal and political freedom... The peak conflict – to stay in free France or return to the 'cage' – is resolved entirely in the spirit of the time, in which people seemingly had choices, but essentially always had only one option.
