This Czech-language book examines the truth about the CIA, an organisation portrayed in spy novels as the super-spy of the free world, from the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War to Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. A selection of 50,000 documents from CIA archives released in 2007 revealed that the intelligence agency, legendary for its supposed omniscience and omnipotence, was not quite so powerful. The documents show that during six decades marked by major events—including the Berlin Airlift, the Russians’ mastery of nuclear power, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the continuing conflict in the Middle East—the CIA often made serious errors of judgement. The author asks whether opening its archives marked a clean break with the past, or whether it was merely a devilish trick to deflect criticism of its current activities.
