A child-friendly edition for today's children Finally, we read Grandma without a dictionary With impressive collages by Miroslav Huptych Grandma by Božena Němcová remains on the list of required school reading, even though it is clear that few children actually read this book. If we want to promote reading of original Czech literature, we need to adapt the archaic language to the reading abilities of today's children so that the content is understandable to them. So that children can READ and not constantly flip through the Dictionary of Standard Czech looking for meanings of outdated and now obsolete words. This edition brings archaic terms, outdated expressions, and incomprehensible phrases to life directly in the text. If a word is irreplaceable, children will find its meaning at the end of the book in a list of such words. The adaptation is done sensitively, taking nothing away or adding anything, with the guiding principle being: meaningful comprehensibility. With this edition, enriched with artistic collages by Miroslav Huptych, we aim to support efforts that would lead to an increase in reading literacy among Czech children. The book was edited by children's book author PhDr. Anna Novotná, a graduate of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, majoring in Czech language, in collaboration with linguist PhDr. Martin Prošek, PhD from the Institute for the Czech Language.
