Description
A deep and very personal testimony about a time that has already become history. Reflections on a changing world, the future, and the past. It will be published in September to mark the author's fiftieth birthday. Martin Vopěnka's book, Colorless Memories, brings a significant piece to the mosaic in which we piece together the image of the 1960s with the benefit of hindsight. Few Czech writers have managed to capture this era as factually, modestly, and convincingly as he has. The author recounts his childhood and family in the book. He does so calmly, focused, and gently, so as not to disrupt the gradual layering of "colorless colors" of his memory onto the canvas he wishes to share with us. However, in his writing, he does not merely record and describe. Because he knows that his childhood is already an irretrievable past, continually receding in time, he also sees it from a historical perspective and the necessary distance, allowing him to evaluate what surrounded him and in what he lived. Beneath the calm flow of his narrative, one can almost sense a strong emotional engagement on nearly every page – it is clear that this book holds special significance for the author, that he internally relives much of what he records.
