Description
This Czech-language novel follows Alois Pein, to whom good fortune has never paid a visit during his thirty years of orderly married life. He leads an ordinary existence as a librarian beside his quarrelsome, perpetually dissatisfied wife until he places a bet for the first time. After winning a large sum, he cleverly keeps it secret from the whole family so that he can quietly help them while secretly enjoying the good life. But what fortune gives, it eventually wants back. The win brings Pein worries that comically turn into the burden of difficult decisions. He gives away his money without being able to boast about it to anyone. The unexpected good fortune requires more character than unexpected misfortune, and Pein deals with it in his own way and with honour.
