Description
This Czech-language historical novel presents Karel Štorkán’s three-part story of the Golem and his creator, Rabbi Löw. The Jewish community flourishes under Rudolf II, who protects the Jews because their leader, Maisel, lends him money for everything he needs. Their lives are nevertheless difficult, as the wealth of Jewish merchants attracts robbers willing to kill for gold. When the emperor leaves for Plzeň during an outbreak of plague, the community is left without protection, prompting Rabbi Löw to create the Golem as a guardian of Prague’s Jewish Town. The various fates of the ghetto’s inhabitants all lead to the Golem, into whom the learned rabbi transfers his inner strength. The Golem protects the Jewish Town even after the death of its benefactor Maisel, when Emperor Rudolf takes possession of his immense fortune. Rabbi Löw eventually puts the Golem to sleep, fearing that it could become a great temptation for many.
