Years Before Dawn (1317 - 1325) Jan of Luxembourg earned the unflattering nickname 'the foreign king' at just twenty-five. The Czech kingdom was without a king, who sought adventure in distant foreign lands. Nothing significant happened in European politics unless the Czech king was involved, and no battle was decided without King Jan and the Czech knighthood by his side. Wild rides across Europe, personal relationships with all European monarchs and the Pope in Avignon, intrigues and battles are inextricably linked to Jan's convoluted reign. However, he was also somewhat lazy and many of the things he gained through his great successes he could no longer maintain. He was also incredibly reckless, especially regarding money. Nevertheless, he had a clear goal: to regain the imperial crown for the Luxembourgs.
