Description
The novel chronicle about Charles IV and his time begins in 1330. After years spent at the French court and a military campaign in northern Italy, seventeen-year-old Charles returns to Bohemia at the request of the Czech lords, marking a decisive turn in his life. He grows fond of his homeland, where his father never felt at home. King John’s marriage to the domineering and passionate Elisabeth of Přemysl was unhappy, yet Charles honors his mother as a martyr and views his father's second marriage to Beatrix as a wrong against the deceased. Tension grows between the extravagant father and the responsible son, but it is merely the counterpoint to the mutual love that awakens in both in due time. The blind King John supports his son with persistent diplomatic efforts and helps him to be elected to the imperial throne. Thanks to his abilities, Charles can realize all his life dreams of the imperial crown, but the unfortunate battle of Crécy, in which King John heroically died, temporarily threatens Charles's dual throne as King of Bohemia and the Roman Emperor.
