Germany's largest city has always enjoyed being the center of attention. And as the capital of a united Germany, it truly attracts a new wave of interest. Its geographical location between Bonn and Warsaw seems symbolic: Bonn connects to the West, while beyond Warsaw lies the 'wild East.' Berlin is situated exactly in the middle, at a fair distance from both. Entrepreneurs and investors recognized these factors soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the euphoria of relocating government offices from the Rhine to the Spree, a new term 'Berlin Republic' emerged – as if the revitalized city wanted to take the wind out of the sails of the rest of the state. In reality, the cultural, scientific, and technological scene in this nervous metropolis is not particularly glorious. Rather, Berlin is characterized by diversity and its corresponding multiculturalism – the city quickly learns to embrace everything new and foreign. The new three-and-a-half million city is no longer the storied 'Athens on the Spree,' despite its unique number of museums. Its new law is change. This must be acknowledged by all who observe the city's rebirth: perhaps during a walk through the 'new' district of Mitte at Potsdamer or Leipziger Platz, in the diplomatic quarter in Tiergarten, or in the government districts along the banks of the Spree.
