Description
Among the most picturesque corners of the city is undoubtedly Česká Street with the adjacent Piarist Square and the following alleys of Hradební and Panská. These places have their own genius loci. Even though they are not far from the city center, it feels as if time has slowed down here, and from every corner, the ancient and recent history breathes upon us. It is no coincidence that this part of the city is associated in the minds of Budějovice residents with markets held on the last Advent Sunday and during Easter. The houses, the monastery, the salt house, the little square—all of this creates a deceptive idyll of bygone times when there was plenty of snow in winter and in summer, part of the city's population succumbed to the charm of water games at today's blind arm, when craftsmen and their families lived in Rabenštejn Tower, and rafts floated down the Vltava River. Česká Street, Panská, Hradební, Piarist Square—all these places certainly deserve a special fifth volume of "Wandering Through the City of České Budějovice." They have a rich history intertwined with the colorful fates of the people who lived here and their unique charm. Although readers can expect 100 stops, not everything could fit into this volume, as the author himself states in the preface.
