Description
It must be around here somewhere. If only it would stop raining. I struggled through the underbrush for a good two hours, soaked to the bone, before I found it. A pile of stones, a broken pot, and a few shards. And also the remnants of the mill wheel shaft. So this is where it was. This is where the miller lived, the one the churchwarden told me about, whose church was demolished. Now to find that apple tree. The rain no longer bothered me. Piece by piece, I was piecing together a forgotten story, filling in the gaps with my own imagination. Maybe it was a bit different. Maybe it never even happened. But that’s not so important. People leave, desires, dreams, pain, and smiles will remain in the landscape. And also the lived human experience. Just close your eyes, and you will hear the clatter of the mill wheel again, telling stories both real and unreal. Full of lessons and warnings. Serious and cheerful. You just have to know how to listen.
