Description
This Czech-language novel follows Jana Ládová, a dentist whose family suffers hardship and division because of her actions. As she lies in hospital, she wonders whether her daughter Máša is right to accuse her of dissatisfaction and greed, or whether her life has been shaped by chance and the era in which she lived. In the early 1990s, while Czechoslovakia undergoes major social changes, Jana tells her story to the young journalist Zdeněk, who plans to write about life under the former regime. She and her husband once attempted to emigrate, but were forced to return home, where the state apparatus treated them as suspicious elements and the State Security service used them as welcome material. Unable to withstand the pressure and threats, Jana paid dearly through the breakdown of her family and the loss of her peace of mind. In her despair, Roman, an active opponent of the regime, helps her escape both the grip of her tormentors and the prison of her own mind.
