The historical thriller The Devil on the Cross deals with the eternal struggle between good and evil set against the backdrop of the Czech High Middle Ages. The narrative is interwoven with faith and superstitions, moral dilemmas, small joys, and the experiences of ordinary people. It does not shy away from the power struggles and intrigues of the ruling classes, which culminate in the famous Battle of Moravian Field. The book's core consists of three main storylines. The first introduces us to the life of the merchant Mikula. The cunning, carefree rogue's world collapses when his son Jakub, an unassuming and clever young man, emerges as a hidden grandmaster of the Luciferian sect, a fanatical servant of the devil. This ruthless beast, capable of anything yet fundamentally convinced of its messianic mission, sends the loving father to the depths. The second storyline features the Czech King Přemysl Otakar II. and his rivals: the noble Boreš of Rýzmburk and the Roman King Rudolf I. Habsburg. The mutual animosity between the monarch and the Czech noble drives the aggrieved Boreš to betray the kingdom. He allies with Přemysl's arch-enemy Rudolf, and pays dearly for it.
