Description
The suburbs of Olomouc, today its city district Nové Sady, is the setting for the story of the farmer Císař's family. The sprawling family tree was created by his five gradually grown sons. The first of them graduated from university, while the other four trained in construction trades. They matured, started families, and their lives developed in an unusually traditional manner according to their father's family tradition and the clan leader's motto "The interests of the family above all." The recorded history did not escape unfavorable events such as the tragic death of one son's wife and the birth of a permanently disabled daughter, as well as other life setbacks. The novel captures the period from 1975 to 2005, including the events of 1989 and the family's "ride" in a carriage over the bumpy pavement of that time.
