As an expatriate, a person who works where needed, the author was also a foreigner in Rome. The reality of living abroad is captured by a well-traveled Roman resident, not a tourist. Their stay in the Eternal City was a backdrop rich in history, architecture, and everyday life for him and his wife. Their apartment on the eighth floor of a row house was a welcome place for colleagues, friends, and acquaintances of acquaintances. Rome is a great attraction, and there was never a shortage of visitors. Free moments were spent walking around Rome, taking trips to the mountainous Apennines and Dolomites, visiting Italian cities, and exploring Etruscan burial sites. A favorite restaurant owned by a Sardinian was a place for pleasant gatherings with friends over excellent dinners. Experiences from work, including numerous business trips for the organization for nutrition and agriculture, complement the stories of colleagues and visitors, many of whom were naturalists like the author. The book has a narrative flow, with notes on what happened in Italy and elsewhere in the world during the twentieth century.
