The main character, Alan Krainer, head of the security department at the law firm Cooper Corporation, is working on the case of Jakub Bayer, who is accused of murdering a man who swindled him out of a large sum of money. At first glance, it's a clear case, with all evidence pointing to Jakub's guilt, putting Alan in an uncomfortable position. Alan believes in his innocence, but the longer he delves into the matter, the more futile his efforts to find the real culprit become. The similarities to his own past intrude on the case at every turn, and he loses his renowned impartiality. Into this already tense situation unexpectedly steps a new client, prominent lawyer Dr. Aldebach, who only needs assistance from Cooper Corporation with his own case, a dispute between an engineering corporation and Chinese industrialists. Alan does not hide his displeasure towards Aldebach, and in return, Aldebach assigns Alan menial tasks that further deepen their mutual antipathy. Alan feels caught between a rock and a hard place.
