Description
Through reading the novella, we experience several days in the year 2165 alongside Jindřich, a citizen of a metropolitan area in Bohemia. The world is recovering from devastation after several periods of war and unrest, but at the cost of individual freedom. The local organization known as Salvation is the government of a group of social engineers. The apparent technological progress is actually controlled by a narrow layer of the chosen few, solely to maintain control over the masses. The totalitarian government of good plays with people's fates according to its own needs and uses uncompromising means to ensure the functioning of the system. The seemingly dull idyll of everyday time gradually transforms into a rapidly flowing river of events that one had not even imagined could happen. Jindřich, a researcher at the Institute of Modern History for half a week and a warehouse worker in the other half, gradually becomes involved in active resistance against the regime, although he initially had no such intentions to that extent. Together with friends and his girlfriend, he eventually finds himself completely outside, both physically and socially, in a community of designated refugees. In the end, there is a surprising revelation of the meaning behind all the events. The story is an allegory about idealism, the total power of the state, manipulation, and hopelessness.
