Description
The author describes various criminal cases from the Krkonoš and Podkrkonoší regions in the last third of the 19th century. Murders, attempted rapes, robbery attacks, thefts, frauds, and burglaries are depicted based on protocols from court hearings and reports in contemporary press. Whether it is the treacherous robbery murder of the former mayor of Dolní Dvůr and innkeeper Josef Holmann, the murder and attempted rape of young girl Marie Borufková, the robbery attack on weaver Eduard Klug, a marriage fraudster, or the forbidden practices of spiritualists. We encounter incorrigible recidivists as well as previously unpunished offenders who were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment for their crimes. The fates of the perpetrators intertwine with the fates of their victims. The book brings closer the stories of people from a long-gone era, yet its theme remains relevant, as crime and punishment persist, albeit in changing forms over time.
