Description
This Czech-language book presents the diary of an ordinary Wehrmacht soldier who enlisted at the age of 19 in autumn 1942 and was sent to the Eastern Front. He describes his combat experiences as well as the soldiers’ everyday life. He reached Stalingrad, narrowly avoided encirclement, and then retreated west with the Wehrmacht. After brief deployments in France and Italy, he returned to the Eastern Front. The author recounts numerous dramatic combat situations from which he often escaped alive only through luck. His account is down-to-earth and factual, making no attempt to portray his experiences as heroic deeds. The book contains no apparent nationalist ideology; rather, it shows that most Wehrmacht soldiers did not fight for their country or Nazi expansionist aims, but simply so that they and their closest comrades could survive.
