Description
This novel begins in the summer of 1939 at the lighthouse in Ploumanac’h on Brittany’s rugged coast, where student Marc Kervel meets Madeleine, a Parisian whose mother comes from Bohemia and whose father is descended from one of France’s wealthiest Jewish families. Their relationship might have remained a fleeting summer romance, but war begins a few weeks later. Inspired by the memories of Desiré Camus, a real participant in the Breton resistance, and by the easygoing atmosphere of French wartime comedies such as Sedmá rota za úplňku, the story unfolds in Brittany, Normandy and occupied Paris. As time passes, the danger grows, while love, humour and suspense remain at its heart.
