Description

This Czech-language book explores the work of Deep Purple and Rainbow from 1968 to 1979. Deep Purple ranks among the most influential and best-known hard rock bands to emerge from the melting pot of musical styles in the late 1960s. The group changed its lineup and style several times and temporarily disbanded in the mid-1970s. From 1975, the brilliant guitarist Ritchie Blackmore followed his own path with Rainbow, achieving particular success alongside legendary singer Ronnie James Dio. Deep Purple returned in its classic Mark II lineup in 1984, but many consider its original and sometimes turbulent era the most important. Steve Pilkington focuses on the period from the release of Shades Of Deep Purple in 1968 to the group’s breakup after Come Taste The Band in 1975, while also covering Rainbow’s first four studio albums. He examines every song on all the albums in detail and records live recordings, DVDs and videos as well. The result is a comprehensive guide to the work of Deep Purple and Rainbow during 1968–1979. The author describes celebrated songs with admiration and appreciation, while also pointing out what he feels did not succeed so well. This is a music critic’s subjective view, but his observations and comments offer further insight into the still fascinating histories of these acclaimed groups. It is intended both for devoted fans and for anyone seeking a guide to the world beyond “Smoke On The Water”.
