Description
The second part of the BAROQUE CYCLE trilogy opens in 1689 and finds both of its main protagonists, Eliza, a former odalisque from the sultan's palace, now Countess of Qwghlm, and adventurer Jack Shaftoe, the king of vagabonds, in desperate situations and completely without resources. Eliza has been stripped of her fortune by the corsair Jean Bart and the intrigues of the French court, while Jack has found himself, through his own fault, as a rowing slave on the Barbary Coast. But desperation breeds desperate and bold ideas, and so both independently plunge into new plans, the outcomes and profits of which are highly uncertain. Neal Stephenson skillfully weaves two threads of an expansive story that briefly touch and then diverge against the backdrop of historical events that helped shape our new age. Simultaneously, the dispute between Newton and Leibniz unfolds, one of the greatest conflicts in the history of science.
