This Czech-language children’s popular science book is the second volume in a series of portraits of great mathematicians and physicists. It recounts the life of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, discoverer of the radiation that has been an indispensable part of modern civilization for a century. Readers learn what preceded the “fortunate accident” worthy of the first Nobel Prize in Physics, how Czech journalists wrote about the “magnificent, far-reaching, invaluable and wondrous” invention, about the envy of Röntgen’s opponents, and about the benefits the invisible “X-rays” have brought to humanity. A professor at the University of Würzburg, Röntgen was known for his economical descriptions of experiments and cautious formulations of conclusions. Although he remained throughout his life aligned with the classical phenomenological school, his work nevertheless became a pillar of modern atomic theory. The publication was prepared in cooperation with the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists.
