Description
The short prose, reflections, brief commentaries, memories, original dialogues, and poems of Roman Brandstaetter represent a rich treasury of his literary art. After the exceptional novel Jesus of Nazareth, we come to understand the wide-ranging talent this Polish author possessed. In one poem, Brandstaetter refers to himself as a "sad witness to madness" and a "collector of useless reflections." This humility should not mislead us. Few can capture human characters and the instability of human hearts amidst great history as masterfully. With refined humor and irony, he describes matters between heaven and earth, as well as how bureaucracy functions. With remarkable insight, he addresses biblical figures and events. There are also several texts dedicated to our country.
