Description

In this volume, the author team addresses an important period in Czech and Central European history, defined by the beginning of the second estate uprising and the Thirty Years' War in 1618, and ending with the defeat of the Turks before the walls of Vienna in 1683, which marked the end of the Ottoman-Muslim expansion on the European continent. The establishment of the Habsburg concept of an absolutist and, as far as possible, confessionally unified monarchy with the dominant position of the Catholic religion marked a fundamental turning point in the history of the Czech lands, which is still often interpreted with political-ideological resentments. It is overlooked that the new establishment had to deal with the consequences of the deep population, economic, and moral crises that the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) particularly provoked on a Central European scale.
