Description
The seventh volume of "The Great History of the Lands of the Crown of Bohemia" describes the period from the ascension of the Habsburgs to the Czech throne to the beginning of the second Czech estates' uprising (1526-1617), which is referred to as the first century of modern times. This period is characterized by economic and cultural flourishing and the overcoming of a certain political and confessional isolation caused by the Hussite wars. At the same time, a certain developmental lag of Central Europe behind Western Europe begins to manifest, which starts to benefit from overseas exploratory voyages. In the Czech lands, political and social development is heading towards a fateful conflict between the traditional estates and the more modern absolutist conception of the monarchical system.
