Description
The Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty aimed at the protection of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. It was signed in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and ratified by 188 states and one regional economic integration organization by June 2004. How does it operate, organize its negotiations, and make its decisions? Is it even possible in today's complex world to coordinate the efforts of hundreds of different countries and entities towards a single goal on a global level? The Czech translation of the publication issued by the Secretariat of the Convention is essentially a report on its activities during the first eight years of its existence – providing insight into both the process of its establishment and the course of subsequent negotiations, and illuminating the nature of its work programs. However, in addition to legal and political information, readers are primarily presented with a basic outline of the state and trends of biodiversity in the world. A similar comprehensive overview, prepared by a single authorial collective, would be difficult to find in our literature.
