Here, in two parallel sections (Britain and the USA), we will begin with an outline of the histories of these two countries. This will be followed by the realities of institutions and everyday life. There is no geographical overview of both countries included, but that is relatively easy to find in guidebooks. Due to space constraints, unfortunately, chapters on architecture, visual arts, and music could not be included – that, however, belongs to advanced study. This volume is primarily intended for 'English learners' in secondary and language schools, in public courses, and for self-learners. There is no need to read the book like a novel, from beginning to end. First, look up what interests you or where you feel you have the biggest gaps in knowledge (you can refer to the final index).
