Description
Brian Morton’s book offers an engaging yet informed account of the life and work of composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich, who played a crucial role in the development of European music and musical culture in the twentieth century. It examines not only the composer himself but also the complexities of musical culture in the part of Europe distorted by communist ideology, providing an impartial and well-grounded study for readers interested in music. The book is in Czech. The connection between life and work, and even more between life and the age in which one lives, is difficult to define even in the calmest existence. Shostakovich defies such patterns more than most creative geniuses. His genius matured exceptionally early, and he overcame the influences acting upon him with extraordinary speed and confidence. The circumstances of his life were so unusual and extreme that his work could not develop naturally; it was shaped not only by society at home and abroad but also by bizarre and unpredictable forces.
