Description
Leona Kalvodová has ventured in her photographs to places where some consider God's presence assured – to churches, monasteries, and the holy city of Jerusalem. However, these serve as backdrops that are inhabited by people through their concentration, silence, and tension. The play of light and fleeting human appearances can also be found in many other places; not least, she captures portraits of her friends, most often Ivan and Dáša Havlová. As Jindřich Štreit writes in his foreword, the greatest mastery must be demonstrated in capturing the face. It is important to capture that hundredth of a second when a glow, inner humility, tension, sadness, or movement of the soul appears on the face. In that moment, the photographer may feel that God is with her. Leona allows us to understand the ordinarily extraordinary life in her photographs.
