The Mischievous Adventures of Max and Moritz (1865) was first published in magazines and later released multiple times in book form under the full title Max und Moritz, eine Bubengeschichte in sieben Streichen. It achieved significant success not only in Germany but was soon translated into dozens of languages. The important place of the two rascals' adventures in the history of comics is due not only to the formal characteristics of the series itself but also to the fact that Max and Moritz defined an entire robust branch of comics. After a long drought, fans of this genre are finally getting a second edition.
