The book, prepared for Kalich by Michal Plzák and Lucie Vopálenská, does not aim to be an academic treatise, nor merely a useful instructional manual, although it contains those elements as well. The conversations with a number of well-known and lesser-known personalities reveal the diverse forms that the awareness of death and the fears surrounding it can take, as well as the very act of discussing this intimate and challenging topic. It is generally assumed today that this is a taboo subject, repressed, but the conversations suggest that this is not entirely the case. A greater challenge may be finding a way to discuss the topic in a 'human' and open manner. One of the purposes of the book is to encourage greater openness regarding questions of human finitude, solitude, suffering, human dignity, and coping with the unknown. In this regard, the publication is inspiring. Some questions are brutally direct and specific, but the treatment never descends into sensationalism or tabloid-like content. The open, friendly, and often even cheerful atmosphere of the conversations 'about the last things...'
