Description
Almost everyone expresses their views on religion or has their own opinion without dedicating attention, time, and energy to deeper study. This leads to misunderstandings, mistakes, and their repetition through the media. Even academic workers and public intellectuals sometimes confuse individual churches and religious movements, misclassifying personalities associated with them and so on. The mission of this dictionary is therefore at least a partial remedy: one cannot meaningfully discuss religion without knowing its protagonists and simultaneously the participants in these discussions. The presented dictionary is temporally limited to the last century, with an emphasis on the period from the First World War to the present. Two facts were important for the selection of personalities included in the dictionary, ideally in combination: (1.) public, ideally societal activity, recognition, or significance, and (2.) active religious engagement at least at the level of a small or local (church) community. A total of 594 entries are included in the dictionary.
