Description
The work Saint John Hus briefly presents the two-hundred-year reverence that Master Jan Hus enjoyed as a martyr and saint in the Czech lands after his burning. Alongside the lay chalice, it was precisely Hus's reverence that co-created the identity of the Hussites, Utraquists, Czech Brethren, or Lutherans, that is, the identity of the then majority of the Czech nation. However, Hus's sacred authority found application not only in the polemics of the Czech Reformation with the Roman Church but primarily within the ideological struggle of one group of reformists against another, so Hus could already then be used to endorse almost anything. The publication includes a rich visual supplement containing period prints and illustrations, some of which are unpublished.
