Description
In letters written after her arrest for subversion of the republic in May 1981, Jiřina Šiklová primarily addresses her children, mother, and longtime friend Milan Machovec, as well as other close ones indirectly. Her industriousness, humor, and interest in others, which are characteristic of her, become a strategy in detention not only to survive but also to make the best use of this 'alienated time' – she helps her daughter prepare for her wedding from a distance, discusses career choices with her son, sends instructions to colleagues in gerontology regarding ongoing research, and writes advice for friends from the dissident movement in case they face the same fate... At the same time, in her unique dual role as a 'muklice' and sociologist, she comments on the events around her, the exotic world of Ruzyně, and its inhabitants.
