Description

There is a rich, primarily foreign-language literature on the history of the Renewed Unity of the Brethren, a church that emerged in the 18th century and is now spread across almost the entire world. As the name suggests, its roots can be traced back to the legacy of the old Czech Unity of the Brethren. At the cradle of the Renewed Unity stood Moravian exiles, descendants of the brethren from the Fulnek congregation, whose last preacher was Jan Amos Comenius. In 1727, they signed the statutes of the 'Brotherly Society' in Herrnhut. Their community soon became so attractive that they gradually found themselves in the minority, even though more than two thousand exiles from Moravia, Bohemia, and Austrian Silesia joined it over the course of fifty years. With their exilic seriousness, the Moravians often stood in the way of their lord, their beloved, imaginative Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf. In the existing literature, they have been mentioned only peripherally, rather superficially, and more from Zinzendorf's perspective. Thus, the Moravians completely fell into the shadow of the eloquent count. This work, on the other hand, focuses primarily on the exiles, attempting to briefly capture their fates, their attitudes, and their contributions to the emerging church, in which they wanted to see the renewed Czech Unity of the Brethren.
