Description
This scholarly book examines the unexplored and, in the Czech context, still almost unknown area of Leibniz’s mathematical studies known as analysis situs, an alternative geometry. Whether it is regarded as merely an offshoot of his project for a formalized language, the so-called universal characteristic, as its only completed component, or as evidence of entirely different original intentions, the book traces its possible influences on Leibniz’s later work. During his correspondence with Samuel Clark, the Newtonian theory of space came under criticism, among other subjects. If Leibniz’s own theory of space can be extracted at all from his hints, disputes and contradictory statements, the book explains how taking analysis situs into account contributes to that understanding. The book is in Czech.
