Description
Metaphors in science, philosophy, and the arts are fundamental to the history of thought. They not only simplify complex subjects but also encourage invention, speculation, and theory. Metaphors played an important role in the emergence of modern ideas of the encyclopaedia and encyclopaedism, contributing to programmes of universal knowledge, general education, and, more recently, open science. While the history of concepts is widely recognized as important and extensively studied, the history of metaphors has so far received considerably less attention. This publication aims to bring it to the forefront.
