Description

This Czech-language scholarly book presents current research into the beginnings and development of Christianization in the lands of the medieval Czech and Polish kingdoms as a dialogue between history, archaeology and cultural anthropology. Rather than understanding Christianization as a single act involving the conversion of princes and their retinues, the founding of bishoprics and archbishoprics, the establishment of monasteries or the development of church administration, twelve Czech and Polish authors approach it as a long-term and complicated process. It is characterized by competition between paganism and Christianity, superstition and orthodoxy, as well as by the gradual and often considerably distorted reception of Western European models of church life in the medieval principalities and kingdoms of Central and Eastern Europe.
