Description
This Czech-language philosophical study examines the work of Blaise Pascal, the French mathematician, philosopher and, above all, Christian, whose 400th birthday was commemorated in 2023. It presents contributions from a conference at Charles University’s Faculty of Humanities, showing Pascal in dialogue with René Descartes, as an embodiment of the free spirit in the sense of Nietzsche’s “middle” period, as an inspiration for the existentially oriented philosophies of Søren Kierkegaard and Romano Guardini, and as a thinker who still confronts us with the feeling of “cosmic horror” from fragment 72 of the Pensées. Pascal also appears as a thinker seemingly absent from Heidegger’s concept of the “history of Being,” only to emerge in a surprising constellation of the epoch of “actualitas.” His thought proves to be still alive, in its own way current, and certainly inspiring.
