Herbart’s Heirs explores a major yet often overlooked area of modern Czech philosophy that developed during the nineteenth century, particularly its second half. Focusing on the roots of Czech formalism, the book offers a unique insight into the historical development and distinctive direction of Czech realist thought in the field of aesthetics as a science. Its contents are in Czech. The first part presents Otakar Hostinský’s 1891 study Herbart’s Aesthetics, a key work not previously published in Czech. Its primary importance lies in revealing the original historical form of the Herbartian conception, whose authenticity essentially brought to an end the interpretation of Herbart developed by the Herbartian school of abstract formalism. The second part examines contemporary intellectual reflections on this traditional and equally stimulating philosophical subject by international and Czech authors, offering a necessary methodological perspective on its creative contribution and potential value for newer currents of thought, whether formalist, structuralist or otherwise scientifically oriented.
