Description
This volume presents, for the first time, a critical edition and translation of the surviving scholarly correspondence of Jan Marek Marci of Kronland (1595–1667), an important scientist, professor of medicine and official of the University of Prague. Its notable correspondents include the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher, the Cistercian Jan Caramuel, and the astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei. The letters offer an illuminating picture of scholarly networks in the early modern period, during the turbulent Thirty Years’ War and the decades that followed. The collection contains 61 letters from 1640 to 1666, dealing mainly with contemporary topics in physics, linguistics, steganography, alchemy and other disciplines. The correspondence is presented in a facing-page Latin-Czech edition, with a preface and critical and explanatory notes. The contents are in Czech and Latin.
