Listinné garance náboženských poměrů na šlechtických panstvích (1436 - 1620) – Hrdlička Josef (2025)

This Czech-language scholarly volume presents documentary records issued between 1436 and 1620 for selected noble-administered towns in Bohemia and Moravia. Their issuers sought to guarantee the future development of religious conditions in the locality. The oldest documents, from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, were mostly issued by Catholics, including the rulers Sigismund of Luxembourg and Albert of Habsburg, who guaranteed the free practice of Communion in both kinds in places that had adopted Utraquism. During the sixteenth century, Utraquist and later Protestant lords and knights came to predominate among the issuers, seeking to guarantee the future practice of their preferred faith in their towns and small towns. From the 1580s, documents issued by Catholic lords also appear; to ensure the continuity of Catholicism, they transferred the right of patronage over parish churches in their towns or throughout their estates to representatives of the Counter-Reformation, namely the Bishop of Olomouc in Moravia and superiors of Jesuit houses in Bohemia. Two-thirds of the records studied were issued between 1580 and 1620, during mounting interconfessional tensions, showing how both sides used them to strengthen their positions in the two Crown Lands. The edition makes 75 documents available in full, each accompanied by a summary regest and scholarly notes. An introductory study presents the complete group of sources, places them in the context of noble diplomatic production at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period, and discusses their historical preservation and present-day survival as originals, confirmations, vidimuses, land-register entries and unauthenticated copies. It also explains the editorial principles. The volume includes name and place indexes and a bibliography of sources and scholarship. It forms part of the redesigned Archiv český series, which retains the original character while receiving a more modern appearance and a cloth binding.
