This Czech-language book explores whether medicine is morally justified not only in treating disease but also in enhancing human beings. Science may soon be able to increase human intelligence, improve memory, extend life, slow ageing and even refine our character. Contemporary debate is unfortunately dominated by extreme positions: on one side, conservatism warns of enhanced superhumans who will subjugate the rest of humanity, while on the other, uncritical optimism believes that technology can solve all human problems. In this accessible work, American bioethicist Allen Buchanan rejects both conservatism, since the human genome is still evolving and intervening in it is not an offence against either God or nature, and excessive optimism, which underestimates the unintended consequences of human enhancement.
