Description

In this work, Quassim Cassam rigorously yet accessibly explains the nature of conspiracy theories, why they are so popular and what makes them harmful. The contents are in Czech. Cassam is a professor of philosophy at the University of Warwick, having previously taught at Cambridge, University College London and Oxford, where he worked for almost twenty years. His early work focused on metaphysics, philosophy of mind and epistemology. In Self and World (1997), he argues that self-awareness as a body in a world of other bodies is a necessary part of experiencing oneself as a subject. Self-Knowledge for Humans (2014) shows how traditional models of self-knowledge overlook the irrational attitudes to which people are prone. Together with John Campbell, Cassam wrote Berkeley's Puzzle. What Does Experience Teach Us? (2014), in which they defend different theories of sensory experience: Campbell's relationalism and Cassam's representationalism. More recently, Cassam has focused on applied epistemology, especially epistemic vices, post-truth and conspiracy theories. In Vices of the Mind. From the Intellectual to the Political (2019), he explains and classifies epistemic vices such as narrow-mindedness, intellectual arrogance, wishful thinking and prejudice—traits and attitudes that obstruct knowledge and harm the process of knowing.
