Description

André Comte-Sponville is a contemporary French philosopher and media personality. After completing his studies, he taught philosophy at secondary schools and later spent almost fifteen years as a university professor, mainly at the philosophy department of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Following the international success of Petit Traité des grandes vertus (1995), he devoted himself exclusively to writing and lecturing. He regularly contributes to leading newspapers such as Le Monde, Libération and Le Nouvel Observateur, appears on French television programmes and lectures for private companies and trade unions. He was a member of France’s National Consultative Ethics Committee for eight years and is also an honorary member of the Association for the Right to Die with Dignity. In addition to his teaching and popularising work, Comte-Sponville has written dozens of books, mainly on ethics and social philosophy. One of his most popular works is The Spirit of Atheism: An Introduction to Spirituality Without God, published in 2006. In this book, whose contents are in Czech, he develops his most detailed account of atheism as compatible with a spiritual life, contrasting it with the better-known “new atheism” of Anglo-American authors such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens.
