Description

This Czech-language book argues that responsibility towards truth and truthfulness cannot be set aside even in politics, despite the fact that everyone sometimes lies and politics has gained a reputation as a domain of falsehood. We may lie, but we cannot escape our fundamental responsibility towards truth and truthfulness. These concepts, however, may be more complicated than we would like to admit. Tony Milligan argues that truthfulness is not simply pedantic truth-telling regardless of the consequences of our statements. The very concept of truth seems indefinable and behaves differently in the various contexts in which we invoke it, from politics to ethics, judgements about humour and everyday life. The book combines an analysis of these subjects with an attempt to explain contemporary political change, suggesting that we do not live in a political era of post-truth, but in an increasingly hybrid democracy combining traditional representative systems with the disruptive influence of direct popular decision-making.
