Description
This book by the American philosopher Martha C. Nussbaum defends humanities education, which is increasingly under pressure from economic imperatives and commercialisation in Western societies. Drawing on the arguments of thinkers including Socrates, Rousseau, Dewey, Mann and Tagore, it argues that a broad humanities education is one of the basic conditions for democracy’s survival. While technical specialisation meets the demands of efficiency and productivity, it is not enough to cultivate critical and innovative thinking. Although the book primarily addresses the situation in the United States, where the pressure of commercialisation is apparently most intense, its central argument undoubtedly applies to our own conditions as well.
