Dismissed as a troubled student with no future, he found a passion for acting after watching the 1948 film adaptation of Hamlet, which set him on an unforeseeable path. With characteristic intensity and vulnerability, he looks back on professional milestones and offers a glimpse behind several of his most iconic roles. He also writes candidly about personal failures: alcohol addiction cost him his first marriage, his relationship with his only child and nearly his life, ultimately leading him to a life of sobriety that has lasted almost half a century. His continuing struggle with the desire to live alone brings him face to face with mortality and with what his father called the Great Mystery.
