Description

This novel is a tribute to women. At a time when national cultures, education and self-confidence are being relativised, Jozef Banáš adds the first woman to his pantheon of notable personalities, following Dubček, Štefánik, Baťa and Stodola. What a bitter paradox: she took her artistic name from a spring called Timrava, whose cold water was drunk by her only love, Jožko Čipkaj, who died of pneumonia shortly afterwards. She refused to marry under pressure and replaced her love for a man with love for ordinary people. Many disliked her directness and truthfulness. She lived in a complex religious, social and national environment that was hostile to women, yet she proved that even in the solitude of remote villages it is possible to create a great work. She knew that if she wanted to drink from the wellspring of truth, she had to go against the current. She found the courage and became a spring herself. Each of her stories was a small rebellion against senseless traditions; she rebelled quietly, but her silence could be heard in every heart. The book is in Slovak.
